About me

Hi, I'm Dave.

Hey there, my name is Dave and I love woodworking. I'm a traditionally trained carpenter and woodworker who specializes in japanese timber framing and furniture making. I use classic “old-world” joinery techniques to build and very rarely use any fasteners, brackets, or metal of any kind. I have a resource conservation background, and use sustainable locally harvested wood on all my projects as much as possible. I have formal training in building western style furniture, japanese timber frame structures, western carpentry, and turned small vessels (like cups and bowls). I've carved spoons, made cutting boards and many other pieces and I don't think there's much I can't make for you.

In my free time, I am a bit of a nerd, and love going to ren faires, and you can see that I've built a lot of “fantasy related” products (just for fun, so far!). I love woodworking, and I love building things that last and I would love to have a conversation about your custom woodworking project. My work is done by hand in my own small shop. I cut joinery by hand and I ensure that the pieces I make are not only made quickly and efficiently, but are of the highest quality possible.

How It's Made

Why Joinery?

Joinery refers to a method of joining pieces of wood together. This can be for a large structure, as with timber framing, or small pieces of furniture. I am passionate about utilizing this ancient method because I believe in building things that last lifetimes. Screws, nails, brackets and other metal products modernly used as ways of building tend to fail over time, due to the nature of having a hard, unmoving piece of metal embedded into a piece of wood, which naturally wants to move, shift and breathe with the atmospheric temperature and humidity will ultimately lead to that joint degrading and loosening over time. But when you use integral joinery to join wood together, if it is cared for, using high quality materials, and built and designed well it will last forever. You might be asking yourself, why all furniture is made this way. The answer is that this is a fairly laborious process that requires more time, skill, and a very specific set of tools which I’ve acquired over the years. Don’t expect to pay Ikea prices, but I try very hard to make my pieces affordable for everyone.

  • No screws or nails to loosen over time
  • Wood-only joints that expand/contract with humidity
  • Built to be heirlooms, not throwaways
  • Sustainable, locally harvested lumber
